In Sri Lanka, the traditional New Year dawns when the Sun moves from the ‘Meena Rashiya’ to ‘Mesha Rashiya’. According to astrology this takes place in the month of April. Therefore, on the last day of the old year, the Sinhalese and Tamil communities prepare to welcome the New Year. On this day, the last minute work is done and the symbolic last bath for the old year is taken. Following this is the ‘Nonagathaya’, or period where there is no auspicious time, all household work, studies and business activities are halted, even food is not consumed. This is a time solely devoted to religious observances and fellowship with family. The Nonagathaya period ends with the dawning of the New Year.
